This week's focus in math has been the penny and nickel. Quiz your child on the name, amount, and counting each of these coins.
On Tuesday, we learned the names of the coins. We compared and contrasted the two. We sang songs about them to help everyone remember! On Thursday, every student was given a paper piggy bank. As I told stories about earning money for doing chores, the students had to add money into their bank. At first, we only used pennies and later exchanged pennies for nickels. We talked about how we would rather have one nickel in our pocket than five pennies. Finally, today during math groups the kids rotated to different math activities. It is amazing to see the kids counting money and learning when to trade out their coins!
Try our game at home:
You need a die, pennies, nickels and at least two people
Take turns rolling the die. The number you roll is the amount of money you take. Trade the pennies for nickels when you have five. The person with the most money wins the game!
Have Fun!
